Monument RI 001 Seulawah, The First Airplane from Aceh to Indonesia for Independence Struggled

Monument RI 001 Seulawah is a plane donated by the people of Aceh to Republic of Indonesia in its struggle against the Dutch that time. This aircraft became forerunner of Garuda Indonesia which now is the biggest airline in Indonesia. This monument also describes Aceh as a capital region.

After Indonesia proclaimed independence on August 1945, actually the independence did not run so smoothly, but Indonesia had to wrestle again with the war against the Dutch. To counter the Dutch attack in 2948, The Indonesian need a plane much to penetrate the enemy’s blockade. Because almost all the territory of Indonesia dominated by the Dutch except Aceh at that time and that time the Indonesian has not been able to buy an aircraft because it was struggling time and the state’s financial condition at that time has not been possible.

At the request of the first president of Indonesia, Mr. Soekarno to the people of Aceh to donate an airplane, then Acehnese people at that time primarily entrepreneur and merchants took the initiative to raise the funds from all levels of Aceh society. On the initiative, the funds collected to purchase an aircraft handed over to president Soekarno at the Aceh Hotel. Later the plane purchased with the call sign RI 001 Seulawah.

To commemorate the Aceh people that has been donated the plane to help Indonesia, the government rebuilt a duplicate of RI 001 Seulawah aircraft that placed in the center of Banda Aceh city precisely in Blang Padang Park. The aircraft purchased with a gold donation from Acehnese people is a Douglas DC 3.

The Monument RI 001 Seulawah can still be seen in Blang Padang square. Blang Padang itself is located in the Center of Banda Aceh city. Approximately 20 minutes from Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport, Blang Bintang, Great Aceh.

The Monument RI 001 Seulawah is placed in the north of Blang Padang park. If you walk around Blang Padang then you will see this monument along with other monuments such as Aceh Thank To The World Monument which is a thankful monument from Aceh to International who help Aceh in Rehabilitation and reconstruction after the conflict and tsunami on December 2004.
